GUIDING INQUIRIES

How can I develop an original character, Lola, as well as depict

her emotionally charged trek through her adolescence? How

can I incorporate insect imagery to represent the concept of

transformation, as well as blur the lines between childhood

innocence and adolescent maturity?

WRITTEN EVIDENCE

I experimented with dynamic compositions, bold colors, and elements of storytelling. I used bright reds and oranges to convey the strong emotions that Lola feels as she grows into her identity, such as anxiety, passion, confusion, and hope. I chose to implement an insect motif to represent metamorphosis, comparable to the rapidly changing period of adolescence. For example, I used dragonflies to draw emphasis to Lola's act of chopping off her long hair, a rite of passage for many girls. Dragonflies represent adaptability and self-realization, which is what this pivoting moment means for Lola as she takes her appearance, and her identity, into her own hands. Lola starts off scared and innocent, not knowing what her future. She goes through experiences and discovers her hobbies, passions, and greatest fears. She learns a lot and gains confidence in her identity, represented by her final form as 'Queen Bee'.
